Return of the Matte (Lipstick, that is)

Matte make a sophisticated comeback this fall after seasons of sexy, shimmery, juicy lips. And it’s a welcome change. Between 9 and 5. When ladies should be ladies – mostly.

But I still contend that a succulent lip is a superior one. So I’ve devised a plan to maintain the wet pout I’ve come to love (yes, even on a windy day!) yet embrace the seasonal trend and feel current. SOLUTION: It’s a matte “mocktail” and I live for it!!

Start with a lip pencil that is a mix between your natural lip color and the color of the lipstick. Apply liner tracing the lip line and fill in slightly but not fully to the center of the lip. Then apply matte lipstick. Finally, top it with a creamy (not high shine, not metallic) gloss.

Some of my favorite mocktails:

~Chanel Nude liner, NARS Barbarella lipstick, Chanel Sesame glossimer (Variation: for a little more shine swap Sesame with MAC Silly Girl lipglass)

~Chanel Nude liner, Estee Lauder Pure Color lipstick in Elizabeth Pink (proceeds of this product go towards the Breast Cancer Research Foundation so it’s a look good-feel good, win-win situation), Estee Lauder Pink Plump high gloss

~Chanel Nude liner, NARS Chelsea Girls lip laquer (not a stick but matte for sure), Estee Lauder Lilac Plump high gloss

~MAC Stripdown liner, NARS Promiscuous lipstick, Chanel Bronze Crystal *limited edition Holiday ‘08* glossimer (apply glossimer only to center of bottom lip for shimmer but not shine)

The best thing about a matte mocktail?? It won’t come off as you sip your cocktail.

Poppy King, formerly of Poppy Cosmetics and undisputed queen of the matte lip, has introduced a line of matte GLOSSES under her new Lipstick Queen brand. Interesting concept to say the least.

OK, thanks LDiva, I don’t want any pink undertones, I’m definitely a Stripdown kind of girl! You just saved me some $$ – THANKS!

MAC Stripdown is definitely a tawny light-medium brown. Chanel Nude is a creamier, darker neutral that has a hint of metallic (when compared against Stripdown although not detectable on the lip). Chanel Nude has more bronze than brown, with a pink undertone. It does not live in the world of bubble-gum or fuscia pink by any means. It is more comparable to MAC Spice than Stripdown.

Dear Divalicious-ness: I have a question, I currently use MAC Stripdown lip liner, how does the Chanel Nude compare? I detest anything pink, prefer a tawny, browny color. Thanks, SCB :-)
