Blown Away
My newly updated favorite BLOWOUT salons in NYC…
And the medal goes to:
GOLD: Eva Scrivo – This newcomer on Bond Street came in out of nowhere, leaving its competitors in the dust. Favorite stylist: Mary. Ask her about our karaoke & cocktails idea for a hair salon!! Seriously, how AWESOME would that be?? We envision it as a pass-the-mike situation :)
SILVER: Warren Tricomi (new location in The Plaza hotel) – I was not a big fan of their 57th Street location or their old management team for that matter. The Plaza is a rebirth, from the edgy modern design to the renewed energy in the space. As always with WT, the hairstylists are top of the line.
BRONZE: Butterfly Studio Salon - I live for the scalp massage that accompanies the Kerastase and Shu Uemura treatments. Heaven on earth. For wavy, sexy, big hair – see Angie. For a whole new fall wardrobe after – see surrounding stores on 5th avenue (south).
RUNNERS UP:
- Blow – perfect for post-plans in the Meatpacking
- John Barrett Salon (in Bergdorfs) – not just for blondes!!
Question: What is the new place that specializes in blow outs for really curly hair!!
I happen to have a more complicated blow out and Hiro at Eva Scrivo ROCKS!
It is almost never fail for me at Buttefly as well!
Is there a new place??
I think most beauty girls would agree that Devachan and Ouidad own the curly hair market for blowouts, cuts and products.
What kind of a blowout does Mary at Eva Scrivo do? I’m looking for a “twirly” blowout (wave at the ends) with volume.
I’m obsessed with blowouts too; I get one before every date.
Also, who do you recommend at Warren Tricomi?
Mary can do twirly. She is amazing! Although I’ve been going to her mostly for straight with height/volume at the crown since I cut my hair for the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program.
For twirly, you can also go to Angie or Dana at Butterfly. They are known for that look. Angie herself has long hair that she wears straight with big curls at the bottom. She’s very familiar with the look.
Blowouts are essential!! I try to extend them as long as possible, forgoing ANYthing that may require a sweat :)
For Warren Tricomi, I go to Elad.
I used to go to a girl named Sarah at Blow on 14th St. She was a genius, especially at curls and what you are calling a “twirly” look. When she left, I could never find out where she went.
One day, I hope to make enough money to locate her and have her live in my house and do my hair every morning. Leaving her chair, I felt like a movie star.
Idiva,
Thanks so much!! This is extremely helpful.
Now that Sarah is gone, is there anyone else you like at Blow?
My soon-to-be-gone stylist worked Sundays and Mondays, which was very helpful since I often go out on those days. So I’m trying to find someone who works on those days
Blow was initially created exclusively as a blowout salon. No cuts or color. While this is currently evolving, the entire staff at Blow is qualified and competent with styling. I would go and check out a few stylists to see who has a vision that most matches how you want your hair to look.
Since it is a low-commitment experiment, unlike cut or color, it can’t hurt to test a few stylists.
Now that Sarah is gone, I go to all different stylists at blow. I like to see how each approaches my hair and I like to walk out with a new look each time.
It’s like trying a new color cosmetic product. You don’t like it – you wash it off. In this case, you don’t like it – you wash it out.
I would also recommend tearsheeting a few magazine pages that represent the hair you want.
I have learned that the words wavy, curly, twirly, volume, body, beach-hair, etc, may not translate from your mind’s eye to your stylist’s hand.
As they say in creative writing classes, it’s better to show than tell :)
Hi ldiva,
I love to experiment too. The thing is, I only go for blowouts on date nights, so I’m pretty nervous about a bad result.
Have you tried Hatsumi (sp) or Christina? I’d love to hear who of the Blow stylists you’ve tried you’ve liked the most. That would give me a great starting point for my experiment, and I promise to post my thoughts too.
If it’s for a date and you want to look your best, I would stick with Mary at Eva Scrivo or Elad at Warren Tricomi.
Blow has a lot of turnover. Diego who had the first chair just left too. I have been to Christina and she did a very good job on a wavy voluminous look when my hair was longer, so I would recommend her as well. I really do think that anyone at Blow can give the look you’re after.
Sadly, I just learned yesterday that Mary is no longer with Eva Scrivo. She left the company the day prior. I have no information yet on where she went but will post once I hear.
PS – Can’t these hairstylists stay put?!
I’m so sorry to hear that Mary has left; I was just about to make an appointment with her. Please update when you know more! Are there any other stylists there that you’ve liked?
By “there,” I mean @ Eva Scrivo.
Hi Sarah!
Yes, Hiro is amazing there (@ Eva Scrivo).
For what you’re calling twirly, you can also go to Angie at Butterfly Studios. Let me know what you choose and how it goes!!
Hi ldiva!
I’m going to try JD and Scott. I’ll let you know how it goes. Is it ok to try different people the first few times you go to a salon?
Absolutely!
I think you date around. Then you pick your favorite to go steady.
If only all relationships were so easy!!
I tried Scott, the salon’s artistic director. He’s great!
Any news on where Mary went after she left Eve Scrivo?
Scott did my birthday blowout last month.
I don’t know if Mary left to pursue her TV and editorial work or if she’s at another salon. Still investigating that…
I have a new hair obsession though, and I think it warrants it’s own post! Stay tuned….
