What I’m Sipping On In… NOVEMBER 2008

November 29, 2008

If Gemma were a rockband, I’d be the president of its fanclub.

I’ve been all about the warm, corner restaurant in the Bowery Hotel since it opened.  I’m there at least once a week and I have to admit I order the same thing every time.  In the food department, that is.

But lately, instead of a simple white wine from the extensive and predominantly-Italian selection of grape regions, I’ve been getting a little wild.

It was only this fall that SCB first introduced me to a red that is both sparkling (frizzante) and served chilled.  And it was love at first sip.  I rarely see it on a wine list or in a wine shop, making it all the more appealing and intriguing.

And I’m proud to announce, it’s on the menu at Gemma!

Last week, I had one, then two, then five glasses of the oh-so-delicious Lambrusco.

And I recommend you all to do the same.  (Plus two advil, water, and your skincare regimen before bed.)

Yes, LDiva – I LOVE the Lambrusco – it’s nice when you find something that isn’t so readily available and becomes a bit of a treasure hunt to find.

Lambrusco had a BAD reputation due to BAD marketing and promotion (Riunite anyone?) but is enjoying a revival thanks to its true Italian identity and heritage being (re)discovered.

I first came upon it at Frankie’s Court Street Spuntino in my Brooklyn neighborhood – it was a La Luna – love at first sip. On a return trip with LDiva, she became a fan as well.

Not loving the Wikipedia article and I truly object to that photo…good Lambrusco is dark ruby red with a foamy Welch’s grape juice-like head. Had a great one at Bacaro in Chinatown tihs week, try and talk the bartender into opening a fresh bottle, that’s the way to experience it.

This is my favorite article and gives suggestions on the best bottles for your own treasure hunt!

    GREAT article!
Who knew Via Emilia was known for its Lambrusco selection.
It is conveniently VERY close for a post-work glass or 10.
In this economy, 10 may be more like it.

PS – If leggings were able to stage a comeback, I hereby state we can single(double?)handedly bring Lambrusco back.

I went to Via Emilia last week! That article piqued my interest. The Lambrusco selection was incredible and the food was GREAT! I’m ready for more anytime…with or without leggings ;-)
