Thanks for the feedback Jordana. It was definitely the trademarked product - I got a salon recommendation from the local distributor and saw the branded bottles. The stylist has been on holiday but is back this weekend so I will report on the outcome after I see her. I'm convinced it is the product wearing off as it's getting worse and worse - it's still straight now but I am back to using flat irons to eliminate frizz 4.5 weeks post treatment :(

@Anonymous I'm sorry to hear you're not happy with the treatment. Are you sure you had the Brazilian Blowout brand treatment? Some other treatments are not designed to be rinsed from the hair, and unfortunately some salons can be misleading about what product they use. As described above, Brazilian Blowout is a brand-name treatment and not a 'category' referring to many brands.

If iy was the real Brazilian Blowout that you had, I am sorry to say that it sounds like some corners were cut during your salon visit. The first step is to shampoo with BB Ant-Residue Shampoo 2-3 times or as needed to achieve 'squeaky-clean' hair, and after the flat-ironing step the product should be fully rinsed from the hair, conditioned with the Masque and then styled as you (the client) wish. You can see the full, proper procedure here: http://www.youtube.com/user/brazilianblowout1#p/u/4/PNXytAtXzoI.

I would recommend calling and making an appointment to speak with the stylist who did your hair, and the manager or owner of the salon, so you can discuss your situation. Hopefully, they can offer you a simple solution, even if it is re-doing the treatment. Please report back!

I had the BB treatment 2.5 weeks ago and I'm not that happy with the results :( It was great for the first few days but now it seems to be wearing off and my hair is quite dull. I've only used the BB shampoo on it, but with my usual conditioner. When I had the treatment the stylist only washed it once and never put on the last masque as she said my hair had absorbed the treatment well and didn't need to be washed again, and I took her word for it. I would love to get your opinion so that I am in a good position going back to discuss it with her.

Alternatively, could it be because of a silicone build up due to using a sulfate free shampoo for the first time?

I'm African American and had the Brazillian Blow treatment done on 09/25/10. I absolutely love it!!! I wash my hair 1-2 times per week and still have the body and shine. It even looks as though my hair has grown since the treatment. Because I'm a fanatic about going by the book, I do as instructed. My only problem is, as an African American we usually keep our scalp moisturized with either hair grease or oil sheen hair spray. My scalp is extremely dry and often flake up which is why I wash it 1-2 times per week. What can I do about the dry scalp? Is there a Brazillian Blowout product for African Americans to apply to their scalp or is there another product out there we can use with the Brazilllian Blowout Treatment? If not, is there another Brazillian treatment that is better for my scalp? Let me know. Thanks

I got the Coppola treatment about 2 months ago and LOVED it. My hair was mostly straight afterwards and for me, that was a good thing! It's still mostly frizz-free, but it's getting a lot of the curl back. Unfortunately, my curl isn't consistent throughout my hair, so it looks weird and I have to straighten it now that its come back. But it is still much easier to straighten it than it was before and it remains frizz free, so I really like the Coppola treatment for that as well.

I'd like to try the new Garnier Sleek & Shine product as well. Is it OK to use on my hair, having already had the Coppola treatment 2 months ago? My hair isn't color treated.

Thank you!

Brazilian Blowout offers online certification, but you will no doubt learn a lot more if you can make it to a live class. You can learn about both options at www.brazilianblowout.com

Some other keratin treatment companies will certify online, or send you an instructional DVD. I would recommend researching each company's site for more info. The other ones mentioned in this post are as follows:

www.globalkeratin.com

www.keratincomplex.com

www.braziliankeratin.com

Best of luck!!!

Pricing varies dramatically based on the city in which you live and even between different salons within a city.
With this type of treatment, you do really want to go to a reputable salon and have it done by a trained and experienced stylist - dare I say, it's worth the splurge?!
I too lived in DC for 4 years and do I remember the fights me and my hair used to get into in the summer!!
You can also try the very affordable Garnier Blow Dry Perfector Kit in-between treatments to extend them or Avon's new Lotus Shield which is getting INSANE reviews among Avon staffers and NYC beauty editors.

Good questions, Jacqueline! Brazilian Blowout will get you the de-frizzing and smoothing, without being quite so straight. This is one of the reasons it is my personal favorite. The Global Keratin 'Light' formula (the only one that does not contain formaldehyde) is very mild, and especially with a Coppola treatment still lingering on your ends, I wouldn't really recommend it. See here a comparison from a client of mine who had had Coppola before but wanted to try Brazilian Blowout: http://www.dahlight.com/the-brilliant-brazilian-blowout/

I have heard great reviews and referrals for Brazilian Blowout with Danny or Cesar at New Wave Salon. I believe it is in Rockville, MD but may have a DC location as well. Best of luck!! BTW, costs will vary from one salon to another, but they should be about the same for any keratin treatment. Juts like anything; you can get a renegade to do it cheap, but you probably don't want to, or you can pay through the nose to have it done in a super-fancy place, but what really matters is the skill and experience of the stylist themself.

OK, one more link, if I may, to a post on choosing a stylist for your keratin treatment: http://amominredhighheels.com/keratin-treatment-choose-stylist/

This is excellent information. I wish I had known this six weeks ago when I got my Keratin by Coppola treatment. Overall, I am very satisfied with the results. I live in hot&humid Washington, DC, and my hair is normally an uncontrollable frizz fest in the summer. This treatment has made my hair silky-smooth no matter the weather. At first, however, it was too straight to a point of not looking natural. As the treatment starts to wear, my hair retains its straightness but has more bounce to it -- which I like. I will definitely have a keratin treatment done again, but I am curious about the Brazilian Blowout and the Global Keratin.

My question concerns the price differential among these different options. I paid $360 (before tip) for the Coppola. I don't want to spend much more on a short-term, temporary treatment.

@Kim the original Brazilian Blowout packaging said 'Basil Cacau' on it, as well as 'Brazilian Blowout by Mauricio Ribeiro.'

The first formula had formaldehyde in it, then it was reformulated in the same packaging but with a sticker stating it did not. The current packaging just says "Brazilian Blowout," has the logo seen on the website (www.brazilianblowout.com) and has been in circulation since July 2009. This is important to note because any existing
bottles of 'Brasil Cacau' may either contain formaldehyde and/or be beyond their shelf life.

I would be skeptical of someone using this product and ask several questions about when/where they got it. You can also check a salon's certification status under the 'Salon Locator' button on the above-mentioned website.

Best of luck to you!

@Brazfab I'm glad you liked the post, and I hope your readers will too! Just to clarify, the only treatments listed which uses formaldehyde are the BKT by Marcia Texteira (which I don't use) and the Globla orduct if a stylist chooses the formula which contains it (I don't, and will proudly show the label to anyone who asks). Brazilian Blowout, Coppola's Keratin Complex and Global's formaldehyde-free treatments all use alternative bonding agents which have been found to cause less problems. The latter is free of any 'hyde,' and therefore most appropriate for clients who may be allergic, have asthma, etc.

Great article. I had no idea that so many products still contain Formaldhyde.
In Brazil it's not been used for a couple of years and I thought it was the same in the States...
Apparently not.

I guess that's why I get asked so often on my blog if the Brazilian treatments like Escova Progressiva are safe to use.

This is a really good article and I'll be posting a link if that's OK, because although most of my readers seem to be using keratin hair treatments at home, rather than in a salon, I think they'll welcome a little clear thinking on a very cloudy subject.

You can check in to my Keratin Care Clinic over at

Keep up the good work.

thank you so much for sharing your experience, liz!!!

i think you look great with straight hair too, but i completely understand not feeling like "you" when you see yourself. i felt that way when i donated my hair and while it was cute and fun on the shorter side, it didn't represent "me" or at least how i see myself.

i'm glad you got past the 3 week mark so you can enjoy the ease of it as a new mommy without feeling like your locks went limp for good!!!

I am fortunate to work with Ldiva and the first participant/model who went to Concept Salon for the Brazilian Blowout. I had been pondering taking the plunge for some time now and after seeing my co-worker's shiny and sleek locks, I made the leap three weeks ago. The process took a little longer for me since I have long hair (3 hours including a haircut). Jo was fantastic and educated me along the way during the process.

The only drawback that was irritating was my eye sensitivity. It reached the point that I shut my eyes for over 20 minutes while Jo was combing in the treatment, and then I wore a plastic visor to cover my eyes. Some people are more sensitive than others, but for me it was definitely uncomfortable.

But...well worth it! I have battled frizz for many years and even on the best hair days I still had a coating of frizz, whether it was curly or straight. I've always embraced my curls but felt that my hair always looked messy and the frizz factor was frustrating. As a working mom I was looking for a solution that would allow me to quickly achieve nice curls or blow my hair straight without it taking 40 minutes. And here I am three weeks later and I am very happy to report that my wish came true!

My initial reaction was mixed, since I am not a fan of stick straight hair on my round face. The first two weeks I enjoyed the quick blowouts, but felt that my hair was too soft to even hold a "flippy" look, so it was pretty straight. But just like Jo said, week #3 I was able to see my curls again and now am enjoying a nice soft curl with ZERO FRIZZ! My hair is shiny and has never looked healthier!

While it is true that Brazilian Blowout has the highest incidence of watering eyes (of the three I do; I assume BKT with its required mask is at least as irritating), it also has the highest reviews on results, and return rates. In my salon, we have recently created a special room for keratin treatments. It is semi-private (three chairs) and has a special filtration/ventilation system to maximize client comfort. I am so happy about this, and my clients love it!

@SCB - I am still loving the ease and convenience of the 10-15 min blow dry I can do myself. I have only gotten one professional blow out since, as opposed to the almost once weekly I used to need and crave!

I have tried the air dry option twice but I have to say it is just not right for me. While it has been several weeks since I had the treatment done, and I am starting to notice that it is washing out and I am getting some of the curl back...I think for me it is more about how my curl naturally grows(curly in certain spots, staighter in other areas) I also truly believe that I simply do not like my hair curly or wavy.

Since I have spent the better part of my adult life trying to tame and control the curl, I never learned how to play with the au natural/air dry (a skill in and of itself). I should mention however, that with the air-dry test the most notable difference is NO FRIZZ! So even if I am not educated in how to style it without using the hair dryer, it is nice to know frizz is one less thing to worry about.

I say go for it!! Let us know what you think!
