Braving the Storm: City Girl Survival Guide

December 20, 2009

NYC girls get around … town!! …. using the subway, bus and as Jay Z distinguishes – yellow cab, gypsy cab, dollar cab.

But when a blizzard strikes, sometimes the best bet is to stay close to home and simply get around on two well-soled and well-protected feet.

Of course this principle didn’t come to mind last night when I ran out to Whole Foods to pick up some snacks for a guest and some remedies for a sick friend. I didn’t think much of the weather when I hit the streets in some sneakers. I figured they were better than my heels. Only a few blocks away and my feet were totally dusted in snow, not to mention the few near wipe-outs I had. Perhaps not so practical, or functional, or smart.

Especially since I got these admittedly borderline-sensible Kamik’s last year and have never once worn them even though they take up precious space hidden in the back of my closet. Best believe they’ll accompany me on my commute tomorrow morning.

I was so annoyed by my lack of city-sensibility, that I made use of the time shacked up inside on a Saturday night to buy two more pairs of  winter warrior boots.  I intend to make good use of them, and even the forgotten Kamiks too.

I love these grey smoke OTK boots because my skinny jeans, leggings or tights will fit snugly inside them and since the wedge is so minimal, they’ll function as flats. While not my top choice for a wintry mix (due to minimal sole gripping),  they’re absolutley perfect for comfortably trekking around town in arctic temps!

And these black wedge Elsey Uggs are actually attractive despite their all-weather classification.

Turns out, if you want snow or rain boots that are even close to cute, prepare to pay a pretty penny.  These were $300 as compared to the $70 Kamiks. But in the event that a shoe switch isn’t possible once you arrive at your destination, a cute boot is mandatory.

So when you’re up at Brooklyn, when you’re down in Tribeca, right next to Di Nero, you can be sure you’re lookin good foreva.

Well, this is one for the books.
I got the grey smoke Turbo otk boots, and they are SO CUTE…SO CUTE!!… except for the fact that the right foot is a light cloudy-grey super-soft leather while the left is a dark blue-grey hard textured leather.
    Completely mismatched pair.
I order shoes online all the time and sometimes there is a fit issue or a color issue (on-screen doesn’t translate to real life), etc, but never have I ever been sent a left that did not belong with its right.

Let’s see how this gets resolved…
My faith in online footwear purchases is being called into question!

the left doesn’t match the right?? that is bad. holiday skeleton crews could be to blame but regardless what a disappointment! they are some really cute boots! i can’t even imagine ldiva walking around trying to make a statement in mismatched boots – this must be fixed asap!

It sounds like you’re quite busy…you need a vacation!

when you do get that break, try cardio barre. depending on your fitness level, you may not be able to walk for a few days but no sneakers required!

WOW – Zappos Customer Service is above TOP NOTCH…
I spoke to Jeff if I recall correctly, and he was a total service superstar.

I am getting a new pair of the Turbos in Grey Smoke, Size 6 sent to my office overnight delivery to ensure they are tracked and arrive by close of business tomorrow so I can enjoy them over the holidays, free shipping, free of charge, free of stress.

I have 14 days to print a return label and ship back the mismatched “pair.”

    LOVE that Zappos!!!

(Although I had less than no interest in the Joke of the Day as I waited for Jeff to pick up my call… not sure what that’s about… off-brand if you ask me.)

Anyhooooo, now back to YAYYYYYYYY :)

Marley!!! I have done Cardio Barre (loooong time ago at Broadway Dance) and it kicked my bootylicious behind big-time!!! Could not walk or crawl for days. I’m wondering if you really don’t like me and this is some reverse psychology… try this class, learn new levels of pain ;)

That’s where I took it too…small world!! BDC stopped offering the class a while ago. :( I bought the DVD and ballet barre (yes ballet barre!!!) for my apt. You don’t really need the barre but I NEEDED it because I’m terribly self-indulgent.

    love sometimes hurts :))
